Your fax cover sheet design is a brilliant marketing tool.

Why? Because your fax cover sheet design costs you literally nothing. You don't have to pay a professional to design it, you don't need to take it to a printer, no fancy paper or cardstock is necessary, and there isn't any expense for color (it would be pointless). It is just about as close to free marketing as you can get. And believe it or not -- it really, really works.

I originally saw this idea being used by a hotel in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. I was staying at the hotel and I asked the front desk if I could use their fax machine. They gave me a fax cover sheet, and when I started to fill it out, I saw they were promoting a $66 hotel and ski lift-ticket package. Not only did I think it was a great (okay, brilliant) idea and subsequently began recommending it in my seminars and publications, but needless to say I had a great time the next month skiing for only $66 for the entire weekend. And who knows how many others saw the promotion on the fax I sent to Denver… and then joined me on the slopes!

A fax cover sheet can be used to promote:

  •  Current specials
  •  Services or products (via extensive lists)
  • Referral incentives
  • New customer promotions
  • Press release information (copies of press releases)

A few cautions however, before you design your fax cover sheet... the following items do not fax well so do not use them on your fax cover sheet.

  • Photos
  • Inverse print (white letters with a dark background)
  • Letters or graphics w/ shadows behind them
  • Graphics with a lot of gray tones
  • Small fonts or intricate fancy fonts
  • Thick dark lines or anything w/ lots of ink (i.e., dark backgrounds)
